Earth system science is a broad field of research, concerned with topics such as meteorology, oceanography, and geology. To study these topics, relevant aspects of the earth system are often simulated. Such simulations are computationally intensive and generate enormous amounts of data, and to run them efficiently, one needs an appropriate HPC system as well as the expertise to use it.
The GWDG has both: below you find the software and services that we offer to support earth system research. An overview of the systems that we operate can be found here.
We have experience with ICON, OpenIFS, and PALM, but if you’d like to involve us in a project that uses another code, or need support, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
On our HPC systems we offer the following software and libraries:
Much more software is available and can be installed by yourself using Spack. If you still miss anything, please contact us.
One problem in dealing with large datasets is visualising them. We offer various remote visualisation tools, that help you visualise your data, without having to copy it to your local computer first. We currently offer the following tools:
More can be installed through conda or pip; if you are still missing any tools here, please let us know.
Wether you are developing your own code or are using an existing code, we can analyse and, if possible, optimise the code’s performance. Many codes benefit from a scaling analysis, but we can also have a closer look at your code’s communication and I/O patterns, and other potential bottlenecks.
We have expertise in tools like VAMPIR, LIKWID, and Score-P.
We operate various HPC systems. Of these, the following are available to universities and publicly funded research institutes:
Future events will be announced on the mailing list.
We work together with various universities and research institutes in Germany. If you wish to collaborate with us, please contact us.
