Kooperatives Langzeitarchiv (koala)

Project Goals

Since 2005 the GWDG has been a cooperation partner of the “Deutsche Nationalbibliothek” (German National Library) in the field of digital preservation. The DNB is mandated by the Law „Gesetz über die Deutsche Nationalbibliothek“ (DNBG) to collect, index, record and archive german publications.

As part of this partnership, the software “koala” was developed by the GWDG.

GWDG’s Role in the project

The GWDG operates the “koala” service on behalf of the DNB. The GWDG advises the DNB on long-term continued operation of the system, capacity planning and works on the improvement of the overall operation with the focus on data security and data management.

Since going live about 215 TB (as of February 2023) of data was archived. Mainly in the context of legal deposit for publishers.

The long-term archiving solution of DNB in conjunction with the GWDG has been certified with the following seals:

The cooperation started with the project “kopal”, funded by the BMBF, from July 2004 to June 2007. Project partners were the Lower Saxony State and the Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen (SUB), the German National Library (DNB) and as an external company IBM. IBM has developed a commercial LZA product, the software “DIAS”, which was hosted by the GWDG.

The cooperation was continued with the project “Digital Preservations for libraries” (DP4lib). The project was requested by the DNB and the SUB Göttingen at the DFG and approved in early 2009. In a “proof of concept”, at the end of 2011, a system configuration based on new hardware and updated software was successfully tested and approved together with DNB, IBM and GWDG.

After successful acceptance testing the system has been in productive operation since April 2013.

From early 2016 to the end of 2017, the GWDG modernized the archiving solution. This was due to new requirements, old hardware and software, as well as discontinuation of IBM’s DIAS software.

Based on the experience gained through the long-term operation and maintenance of the solution provided by IBM, GWDG has developed the new software “koala”. This was provided to DNB including the operating concept and cost plan.

Since March 2012 without DFG funding in productive operation funded by the DNB.
